I am married with 2 step children. One child (boy 13 years old) was born in the UK and his birth certificate shows his surname as the same as his father. The other child (girl 12 years old) was born in New Zealand and her birth certificate shows her surname as the same as her father. Both these children now live in New Zealand with their mother (my husbands ex partner). She has enrolled them both in schools from the time they were old enough to start school but she has stated that their surnames are the same as hers and not of their father. My husband is very upset about this and wonders if this is legal and what problems this might cause them in the future.
If anyone can help with this I wiould be very gratefull.
