Thanks for posting. It depends how long the person wants to stay in the UK. If it's just a short visit, say for tourism, a US citizen does not need to apply for a visa and therefore will unlikely be asked any questions about their criminal record.
If the person wishes to stay longer they must apply for a visa. On the visa application, they must explain what their crime was. A visa will not necessarily be denied if someone has a criminal record, but they must divulge details of their criminal record.
The best course of action would be to contact your nearest British Embassy for further information. Find an Embassy
