Could anyone answer this question for me, my brother was contacted by the housing benefit to tell him that he was entitled to claim housing benefit and he should do so straight away, he filled out all the forms etc sent them off, they contacted him to tell him what his award would be, they then gave him a date he would be paid, that date came and went and after numerous visits to the local houseing office, they said they would be paying him definately on a certain date and they would backdate the rest of the payments which he would recive on 9th of December, he recieved the first £350 in his bank and he has now been sent a letter telling him that he's not entitled to the benefit and that he has to pay back the money he's already been paid, they're very sorry but it was an admin error! He wouldn't mind so much but they contacted him to tell him to claim in the first place and now they want the money paying back and he just doesn't have it, where does he stand legally as they have given him a deadline to pay it all back and it's right on Chriistmas and he's borrowed money from our parents on the understanding that he would have the owed money back dated?
