I am enquiring on a friends behalf regarding legal aid. What legal aid with a solicitor is available for help and representation with an appeal to the upper tier tribunal of ESA appeals

Legal aid is available to those who cannot afford legal costs in problems relating to Employment and Support Allowance. It is possible to get a solicitor or barrister to prepare your case and represent you in court.

This depends on where your friend lives, i'm unsure about the legal aid boards of England and Wales but the Scottish Legal aid board will not grant legal aid for ESA appeal representation and preparation, they will, if eligible, provide legal aid for further evidence such as an independant psychiatric report.

Just a word of warning , this is not legal aid its : "legal help" and the difference (something I recentley experienced) is that any help will be provided over the phone and the process is not quick so dont expect it to happen in a timely fashion . Basically imagine trying to get legal help in a call centre format (they refer you to a specialist ) but that assistance will be limited to the phone unless I was lied to in my experience . (not an expert)
